Writer: Ashley DirnbergerAshley Dirnberger

Springtime is right around the corner, and the days are slowly warming up. What better way to burn energy than getting back to playing outside! Here are some fun ideas for you and your little ones to do outside, from simple and relaxing activities to more energy burning activities.

  1. Cloud Watching- This calm activity is great for speech development! Have your child view the clouds and ask them to describe the clouds or describe what they are feeling while watching them.

  2. Bug Hunting- With this activity, you and your child can look for different bugs near trees, plants, and under rocks! Ask your child to describe the bugs! You can also print a list of pictures to bring with you and count how many of the different bugs you find!

  3. Bubbles- What child doesn't love bubbles? Blowing and catching bubbles helps children with both sensory and joint attention difficulties. Get scented bubbles for additional sensory input.

  4. Obstacle Course- Obstacle courses are great for burning off excess energy as well as working on multiple gross motor skills. Obstacle courses can be made with several different objects such as balls, pool noodles, or cones. Depending on your child's abilities, obstacle courses are great for working on jumping, crawling or bouncing a a ball.

  5. Chalk- Sidewalk chalk is a great way to spend time outdoors and helps children work on their creativity as well as fine motor skills. To add a spin on it, try making your own chalk with corn starch, water and food coloring! DIY Magic Sidewalk Chalk Paint Recipe (Washable!) (onmykidsplate.com)
